What You Need to Know About Campus Closures and Delays

Campus closures and delays disrupt operations and classes at Highline College. But the safety of students and employees is critical.

College leaders weigh several factors when making these decisions. When weather is the issue — such as snow — here are some questions leaders ask:

  • What are the conditions on campus? Do roads and parking lots need to be plowed to allow for safe travel? Do sidewalks need to be shoveled and sanded so people can walk safely?
  • What are the conditions in the area? Highline serves a large region, where weather conditions may vary. Even if Highline’s campus is safe, the roads leading to the college could be unsafe for travel.
  • What are the weather predictions? A big storm may be on its way, which could trap students and employees on campus.
  • What are area school districts doing? If schools in the area delay the start of classes or close for the day, then Highline College is likely to do the same. Why? Many Highline students have students of their own attending schools in area districts, meaning they would need to stay home. And, Highline has many Running Start students who are also enrolled in area high schools.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if Highline is open but I can’t make it to campus due to weather conditions? Your safety is critical. Use your best judgment to determine if you can make it safely to campus. Students should contact instructors if they are unable to attend classes. Likewise, employees should contact their supervisors if they will need to miss work.
  • If my class is cancelled, will it be rescheduled? Unlike the K–12 school system, community colleges don’t have makeup days for campus closures or delays.
